Definition

Notes
The NIH Toolbox 9-Hole Pegboard Dexterity Test is a simple test of manual dexterity; it records the time required for the participant to accurately place and remove nine plastic pegs into a plastic pegboard. The protocol includes one practice and one timed trial with each hand. Raw scores are recorded as time in seconds that it takes the participant to complete the task with each hand (a separate score for each). The test takes approximately four minutes to administer and is recommended for ages 3-85. Dominant vs. Non-Dominant Hand (i.e., handedness) is assessed at the outset of Toolbox testing

Guidelines/Instructions
Say: Now I will time how fast you can do this. Pick up the pegs one at a time using this (point; say: right or left) hand only. Put them in the holes, one at a time, until all 9 holes are filled. Then take them all out, one at a time. The pegs can be put in the holes or taken out in any order. Remember to go as fast as you can. Are you ready? 3, 2, 1 Go! Start timer on screen when you say go, move cursor to stop button, and stop timer when participant places final peg in cup. As participant is placing final peg, say: And take them out.
