Guidelines/Instructions
IMMEDIATE: Say, " I' m going to tell you a story. Listen carefully. I want you to repeat the whole story back to me exactly as I told it to you. I can only read it once. Are you ready?" Although " exactly" is in the instructions to the child, some semantically acceptable substitutions, as indicated, can receive credit. "Okay, here is the story." Use natural inflection when reading the story. After reading the story, say "Now tell me the same story. Start now." Probe: if the child does not initiate the story, say, " What was the story about? What happened?" Do not tell the child to remember the story for later. Discontinue rule: None. Repetition: Repeat the directions one time if requested. Prompt as indicated if the child does not begin retelling the story within 10 seconds. DELAYED: Do not reread the story. The child must recall the story from the prior experience. Sa, " Remember, the story (title of story child heard)? Tell me the story again. Try to remember as much as you can." As the child retells the story, check story elements correctly or record verbatim any content variations in the story produced.. Discontinue rule: None. Repeat the directions one time if requested.
